Mumbai, Mar 12 (PTI) The Indian rupee today recovered by 23 paise from its last close against the US currency in early trade due to the selling of dollars by banks and corporates at the current level on the back of recovery in stock markets.

The rupee opened higher as gains in the share markets calmed nerves about capital outflows, with the dollar's weakness overseas also impacting sentiment. Shares rose more than two per cent early trade as investors tried to catch up with gains on Wall Street during the two-day local holiday.

The BSE Sensex rose by 155 points or 1.90 per cent in the early trade.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the rupee resumed higher at Rs 51.54/56 and hovered in a range of Rs 51.52 and Rs 51.90 before being quoted at Rs 51.64/65 at 1030 hours from its Monday's close of Rs 51.87/89, showing a rise of 23 paise. PTI
