Mumbai, May 14: All national and regional tea marketing companies are planning to increase tea prices by up to Rs 40 per kilogram in two phases, with the first hike of Rs 20 per kilogram to be effective from tomorrow, an industry official said.
“All national and regional marketing companies are increasing tea prices by up to Rs 40 per kilogram in two phases due to the increase in tea auction prices. The first hike of Rs 20 per kilogram will be from May 15 and another during the next month,” Federation of Tea Traders Association of Maharashtra president Harendra Shah told reporters here today.
International shortage and crop failure have resulted in a further price rise, Shah said, adding, “We want from the Government duty-free import of tea and also bring sale of total tea crop through auction only.” “International shortage of tea is due to failure of crop in Kenya and Sri Lanka. And in India too, the shortage is due to fall in plucking of tea leaves in north and south Indian tea gardens,” he said. (PTI)
