Buddha seeks plan to keep Infosys, Wipro from leaving

Concerned over the possible exit of tech majors Wipro and Infosys from the proposed IT township in Rajarhat, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattachajree on Friday asked his IT Minister Debesh Das to work out a Plan B and make land available for the two companies. Bhattacharjee reportedly told his colleague that the companies would have to be retained at any cost for Bengal's future in the IT sector.

Industry sources had indicated that Infosys and Wipro were almost ready to shelve their plans to investment in Bengal as suitable land was not available at affordable prices. The government fears the Vedic Village controversy, involving serious allegations of forcible land grab for the IT park, could have prompted them to do a rethink on setting up shop in Rajarhat.

On Friday, the CM summoned Das to the CPM state secretariat meeting and asked him to explain the present status of land earmarked for Wipro and Infosys. "Problems may have risen due to forcible land acquisition for the IT Park. The police will take action against those who engaged musclemen to grab land. But we should not allow these IT companies to leave the state," the CM reportedly told his minister. "We have to find out an alternative," he said at the meeting, attended by Industries Minister Nirupam and CPM state secretary Biman Bose.

Meanwhile, Land and Land Reforms Minister Abdur Rezzak Mollah on Friday announced the setting up of an inquiry committee to look into irregularities in land deals with private players like the Vedic Diamond and Akash Link. The inquiry panel, to be headed by a top official of the Land Department, will look into allegations of illegal acquisition, conversion and mutation of land in Bhangar area of South 24-Parganas.

Accordingly, the Land Reforms Commissioner has formed a high-level committee to inspect mutation and conversion of land and allied matters related to Webel-Aksh IT links Private limited, West Bengal Electronics Industries Development Corporation Limited and Vedic Diamond IT Links Private Limited. The five-member committee has been asked to submit its report by a month. "Action will be taken if any officials is found guilty of illegal land conversion," said Mollah.
