“We had already conducted a feasibility study in Assam. If everything goes according to plan, we will be setting up a manufacturing unit in the State soon,” Anusorn Muttaraid, Director of Delta Electronics (Thailand) told this correspondent over telephone from New Delhi today. Citing reasons for his keenness to invest in the State, Muttaraid, said that this region is well connected with Myanmar Bangladesh and Bhutan and therefore, the company has decided to set up the plant. “We have got proposals from the Bangladesh Government also, but considering the upswing in the Indian economy, Delta has opted for Assam as a safe destination for investments,” he added.
Muttaraid who is also the chairman of the Thailand India Business Council and instrumental in establishing trade links between Thailand and the North East traders, advocated opening of road links between North East and Thailand via Myanmar. Providing feedback on the Indian operation, he informed that Delta had already set up four manufacturing plants scattered in different locations in the country. “In India, we have infused nearly $ 80 million in our four plants. These units basically manufacture telecommunication and computer parts, which are used by leading telecom service providers in the world,” Muttaraid said. In this context, he observed that the existing communication system of the region should be improved. “Logistics is a major problem in the North East. If we want to target the Myanmar and Bangladesh markets, the present system has to be improved,” he said.
It may be recalled that CP Group, a leading company of Thailand associated with aquaculture sector had conducted a feasibility study near Nagaon to set up a plant with an investment of $ 25 million, but the project has been hit hard by the ongoing global recession.
Though several Thai companies are keen on investing in the region in agriculture, telecommunication and infrastructure sectors, yet Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is creating hurdles for them.
