Sensex rises 77 points in opening trade

Mumbai, Sep 4 (PTI) The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index Sensex today recovered by over 77 points in opening trade on emergence of buying by funds and retail investors, triggered by firming trends in other Asian bourses.

The 30-share BSE Sensex rose by 77.10 points, or 0.50 per cent to 15,475.43 points in opening trade with all the sectoral indices rising up to 1.26 per cent. The BSE barometer had lost nearly 525 points, or 3.40 per cent in the past four sessions.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty recovered by 23.50 points, or 0.51 per cent to 4,617.05 points.

Brokers said buying activity emerged on the domestic markets mostly on the back of firming trend at other Asian equity markets which were up by almost 0.55 per cent in the morning trade, buoyed by overnight gains on the US markets.

Major gainers were Reliance Industries by 0.

NHPC to be listed on Sept 1

NHPC would be listed on the stock exchanges on September 1, 2009 on Bombay Stock Exchange. "From September 1, the equity shares of NHPC Ltd shall be listed and admitted to dealing in the exchange," the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) said in a statement today.

The company raised Rs 6,000 crore through its initial public offer (IPO) that closed on August 12. It had come out with 167.73 crore shares in the primary market in the price band of Rs 30-36.

Over one-third stake is being held by the government in NHPC, which is the sole promoter of the company.

The IPO proceeds would be used to part fund the company's ongoing investments in 11 projects. It also has plans to add 14,000 MW of power by 2020 for which it has either completed survey of projects or was in the process of surveying several others.

Indian equities open lower on profit taking

MUMBAI: Indian equities opened lower on Tuesday as investors resorted to booking profits after making some robust gains during all the three previous trading sessions.

The sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) opened at 15,573.91 points, against Monday's close at 15,628.75 points, and was ruling at 15,518.06 points, with a loss of 110.69 points or 0.71 percent.

The index had closed at with a gain of 387.92 points, or 2.55 percent on Monday.

All the sector-specific indices of the exchange were in the red but for those pertaining to auto and consumer durable stocks. Tata Motors, NTPC and Grasim were among the stocks quoting higher, while Reliance Infrastructure, Tata Power and ICICI Bank led the losers.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader S&P CNX Nifty was ruling at 4,616.55 points, against Monday's close at 4,642.80 points, with a loss of 0.57 percent, data with the exchange showed.

Nifty touches nine-month high, above 4500

MUMBAI: Indian markets soared soon after the opening bell Monday, with a key index rising over 244 points within the first 15 minutes of trading.


The benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the Sensex, opened at 14,746.51 points, above Friday's close of 14,625.25. Within 15 minutes, it had risen to 14,870.01 points, 244.76 points or 1.67% above the last close.

At the same time, the S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) stood at 4,535.65 points, 1.95% above its last close at 4,448.95. At this level the Nifty was at its nine month high.

Broader market indices were doing a tad better, with the BSE midcap index rising 2.64% from its previous close, while the BSE smallcap index was up 2.7%.
